Kitty Black is an emerging children’s author from Perth with a background in psychology and research. In 2015, she began blogging and freelance writing while looking after her small children. Kitty’s most recent book is The Starting School List (Affirm Press, 2023). She is also the author of: Who’s Afraid of the Quite Nice Wolf? (New Frontier, 2019), A Crocodile in the Family (Hachette, 2020), Mr Bat Wants a Hat (New Frontier, 2021), Max and Worry (Affirm 2021) and Lucy and Sad (Affirm, 2021).
Kitty’s next project is the middle grade trilogy, Everglade – a brilliant series with echoes of Buffy and Marvel, combining magic, black comedy, neuro-divergence and beautiful tween-age friendships. It will be published by Affirm Press in 2024.
In 2018, she completed a Fellowship with Paper Bird Books, funded by Fremantle Libraries and was presented as Creative Kids Tales ‘Featured Emerging Author of the Month’ in November 2018.
In addition to writing picture books, Kitty has also published numerous articles and blog posts about parenting for Mother.ly, Pinky McKay’s website, Kidspot, Scary Mommy, Her View From Home, Parent.Co, The Mother Magazine and Mamapedia.
